Students will practice the following watercolor techniques in their sketchbook:
1. Wet on wet. Get paper wet with brush and clean water. Apply watercolor to wet paper. Watercolor will disperse and travel freely when applied to wet paper.
2. Wet on Dry. Apply watercolor to dry paper. It is relatively easy to control the paint using this technique.
3. Salt application. Sprinkle salt onto wet watercolor pigment. Salt will absorb the paint leaving a speckled texture.
4. Rice application. Sprinkle rice onto wet watercolor pigment. The rice will absorb the paint leaving a distinct texture.
4. Plastic Wrap. Lay plastic wrap on top of wet watercolor paper. Don't take off until watercolor paint is completely dry. Plastic wrap with create shapes/texture in the painted surface.
5. Rubbing Alchohol. Sprinkle/drop rubbing alcohol onto wet watercolor paint. Rubbing alcohol will disperse the pigment.
6. Crayon Resist. Watercolor will not stick to areas that have been covered in wax or wax crayon.
7. Rubber cement/ masking fluid. Apply rubber cement or masking fluid to areas that you do not want covered in paint. Let dry. Paint over rubber cement with watercolor. When watercolor is dry, rub off rubber cement/masking fluid.
8. Stencil. Use a found object stencil or cut out to create a stenciled image. It may work best to apply watercolor with a sponge when doing this technique.
