A Zentangle, also sometimes referred to as a "Zen Doodle", is a fun, relaxing approach to abstract drawing. This style of drawing encourages artists and art students to:
How is a Zentangle or a Zen Doodle different from a doodle?
- not become too attached to a specific plan
- embrace spontaneity
- place as much emphasis on the process as the product
How is a Zentangle or a Zen Doodle different from a doodle?
- Unlike conventional doodling, zentangles require focus.
- Zentangles also use structured and often repetitive patterns.
- line
- shape
- space
- texture
- balance
- contrast
- pattern
- rhythm
- repetition
- unity
- Use a variety of line: thin, thick, curved, diagonal, straight, zig-zagged, dashed or broken
- Use line to create shapes. Shapes can be geometric or organic (free-form).
- Create contrast between black and white (positive and negative space).
- Create contrast between bold and delicate.
- Create contrast between "busy" and "restful" areas in the design.
Use line and shape to create patterns.
