Use grid as a tool to help accurately map out contour line composition. Grid lines should be light so that you can easily erase them. Map everything out first with contour line. DO NOT start shading until entire drawing is sketched out!
Use a full range of value in drawing (white, light grey, mid-tone grey, dark grey, and black).
Use tissue/scrap paper to spread out smooth mid-tones.
Use your eraser as a drawing tool (for creating texture, highlights)
Pay attention to small details--they often make the difference between a good and a great drawing!
Using the 4 Point Scale to set goals and guide your drawing:
1.
drawing does not show a full range of value.
little contrast
no intentional surface texture
2.
better range of value
some contrast
needs more mid-tone values
more texture-work needed (hair)
3.
good range of value
some work done to create texture
additional work with surface textures could be added
